Understanding Weighted Grades

In weighted grading, a 10% drop in your midterm grade doesn't mean a 10% drop in your overall grade. The impact depends on the weight of each component.

Overall grade = Σ(Weight × Grade) ÷ Σ(Weights)

If the final is worth 30%, then each percentage point on the final moves your overall grade by 0.30 points. A 10-point final improvement = 3-point overall improvement.

Strategy: Which Grades to Focus On

Focus on high-weight categories. A 10% improvement in a 30%-weight final moves your grade 3 points. A 10% improvement in 10%-weight participation moves it only 1 point.

Don't neglect small categories. Getting 100% on participation (10% weight) is often easier than improving your exam score by 3.3 points.

Frequently Asked Questions

It depends on the weight. If the final is 30% of your grade, each percentage point on the final moves your overall grade by 0.3 points. To move from a B to an A (typically 7 points), you'd need to score about 23 points higher than your current average on the final.
Depends on the weights. Use the calculator above — enter your actual grades and see what you need. Often, if the midterm is 25% and you got a 60%, you can still reach 90% if you ace the remaining 75%.
Most competitive programs want 3.5+ (roughly A−/B+ average). Top programs often expect 3.7+. However, strong GRE scores, research experience, and recommendations can offset a lower GPA.
