Investment Loss Recovery Calculator
The cruel math of losses: you always need a bigger gain to get back to even.
The Asymmetry of Gains and Losses
This is one of the most important concepts in investing that many people get wrong: percentage losses and gains are not symmetrical.
A 10% loss requires an 11.1% gain. Seems close. But as losses grow, the required recovery accelerates dramatically.
The Loss/Recovery Table
| Loss | Recovery Needed | $10,000 Example |
|---|---|---|
| 5% | 5.3% | $9,500 → needs +$500 |
| 10% | 11.1% | $9,000 → needs +$1,000 |
| 20% | 25.0% | $8,000 → needs +$2,000 |
| 30% | 42.9% | $7,000 → needs +$3,000 |
| 40% | 66.7% | $6,000 → needs +$4,000 |
| 50% | 100% | $5,000 → needs to double! |
| 60% | 150% | $4,000 → needs +$6,000 |
| 75% | 300% | $2,500 → needs to 4× |
| 90% | 900% | $1,000 → nearly impossible |
Notice the cliff: a 50% loss requires a 100% gain (doubling your money). A 90% loss requires a 900% gain — nearly impossible. This is why the #1 rule of investing is often stated as "don't lose money."
Why This Matters for Your Portfolio
Downside protection is more valuable than upside capture. Avoiding a 20% loss is equivalent to capturing a 25% gain. This mathematical asymmetry is why conservative investing strategies often outperform aggressive ones over the long term.
