How Price Match Guarantees Actually Work

Most price match guarantees follow this formula: the store matches the competitor's lower price, then beats it by a percentage of the difference between the two prices.

Final Price = Competitor Price − (Store Price − Competitor Price) × Beat%

Example: Store sells a TV for $500, competitor has it for $450. With a 10% beat guarantee: Difference = $50, Beat bonus = $5, Your price = $450 − $5 = $445.

When to Price Match vs. Buy Elsewhere

Price match when: The store offers a beat bonus, you can save a trip, or you have store credit/rewards there.

Buy elsewhere when: The competitor offers additional perks (warranty, free delivery, cashback credit card bonus) that make their total value better. A 10% beat on the price difference is often only a few dollars — not worth fighting for on small purchases.

Pro tip: Some stores price match their own website prices, which can be lower than in-store. Always check the retailer's own app before asking for a competitor match.

Most stores exclude doorbusters, limited-quantity deals, and Black Friday/Cyber Monday pricing from their price match policies. Regular sale prices at competitors are usually still matchable.
Yes. Most stores require you to show the competitor's current advertisement, website, or app showing the lower price. The item must be identical (same model, color, size) and currently in stock at the competitor.
