Why Insurance Discounts Don't Simply Add Up

Insurance companies apply discounts multiplicatively, not additively. A 10% safe driver discount + 15% bundling discount + 10% multi-car discount does NOT equal 35% off.

Real Discount = 1 − (1 − D1) × (1 − D2) × (1 − D3)

The math: 1 − (0.90 × 0.85 × 0.90) = 1 − 0.6885 = 31.15%. You're "losing" 3.85 percentage points compared to naive addition. On a $2,000 premium, that's $77 less savings than you expected.

Maximizing Your Insurance Discounts

Stack everything: Even if each discount is small, stacking 5 discounts of 5-10% each gives you 23-41% off total.

Ask explicitly: Many discounts are not applied automatically. Call your insurer and ask what discounts you qualify for — agents often have discretion to apply ones you didn't know about.

Shop around anyway: A 30% discount on an overpriced policy might still cost more than a competitor's base rate. Always compare final prices, not just discount percentages.

Frequently Asked Questions

Multiplicatively. Each discount is applied to the already-reduced premium, not the original. So 10% + 15% + 10% = 31.2% total (not 35%). This is the same math as stacking store discounts.
Theoretical maximum depends on the insurer, but most cap total discounts at 30-50%. Even if you qualify for discounts that would add up to 60%, the insurer caps it. Always ask about the maximum combined discount.
Usually yes for the discount (10-25%), but not always. Sometimes a specialized insurer offers a better rate on one policy that outweighs the bundling discount. Compare total cost both ways.
