Does It Matter If Tax Is Applied Before or After a Discount?

Here's a reassuring fact: mathematically, the final amount is the same whether tax is calculated before or after the discount.

$100 × 0.90 × 1.0825 = $100 × 1.0825 × 0.90 = $97.43

This is because multiplication is commutative. However, in practice, stores almost always apply the discount first, then charge tax on the reduced amount — which is what customers expect to see on receipts.

Frequently Asked Questions

In the US, sales tax is calculated on the discounted price. If a $100 item is 10% off, tax applies to $90, not $100.
Since the 2018 South Dakota v. Wayfair Supreme Court decision, most online retailers collect sales tax based on where the item is shipped.
Oregon, Montana, Delaware, New Hampshire, and most of Alaska have no state sales tax. Items there are exactly the discounted price.
Store coupons typically reduce the taxable amount. Manufacturer coupons may or may not, depending on state law.
